Commissioners:
The Abeytas-Sabinal Zoning District consists of 5 commissioners, each with a 2 year term.
Albert (Al) Sandoval - I am passionate about helping our community to preserve an environment that is consistent with the traditions of our ancestors - a community that is committed to agriculture, farming and ranching. My wife and I moved to Abeytas in 2008 after purchasing property that had been in her family since the 1700's. Since moving to Abeytas we have been involved in helping our neighbors and family to preserve the lifestyle of our ancestors for future generations. Please vote for me and together we can limit commercial and industrial entities that threaten and disrupt this way of life.
Andres Salas - Our lands are becoming prime targets for dirty and dangerous development as Albuquerque and communities north of us continue to grow and look for inexpensive options for their operations. We must regulate that growth and defend our culture and way of life or lose it for generations to come. I am running to defend our community from any operation that is not healthy and safe for our families and children.
Joseph M Tibbets - I have lived in NM since 1956, excepting time away in the US Navy, Tucson, AZ, and in Las Cruces. Starting in 1965, I trained as a adobero and learned to draft for the adobe builders in the Albuquerque and North Valley. In 1990, I built a small, strong adobe in Sabinal as my residence. My drafting partner, Raul Ortega and I, work as dibujantes in this time-honored tradition, which serves as an example of a "low impact" cottage industry here. Currently, the Abeytas/Sabinal Special Zoning District enjoys a scenic balance between the natural and the historic, but intrusion from heavy industry could spoil it. We must look far ahead and work with those entities that co-exist with us. Paramount to this balance is the importance of maintaining the acequias, the farmlands, ranch lands and the agricultural tradition that is a survival part of our roots, We must somehow be futuristic and traditional at the same time.
Joseph Leyba - I believe we are entrusted with the care and preservation of our natural and cultural resources. This can be achieved by setting a model which protects the indigenous peoples, lands, and species of the Abeytas/Sabinal Zoning District. Currently the area has experienced a growth in population, and we would like to move forward with educating inhabitants of the area about the rich history and biological diversity that the Bosque provides. I feel that through thoughtful regulations, we can achieve this goal which will have a significant impact on our future generations and aid significantly in procuring a habitat to promote a healthy ecosystem for the future. I am running so that I can help make a positive impact, not only for my family, but generations to come.
Alfred Anthony (Tony) Black - My wife and I own Black's Smuggler Winery. We moved here in 2012. We chose the Sabinal/Bosque community because of its rich rural lifestyle. Being one of the few small businesses in the area, it is important that we understand and work with consideration for our neighbors. While our community is rich in history and traditions, we also need to create a balance between those traditions and the world we live in today. Some changes might improve and enrich our lives, however I oppose large industry invading and altering our community negatively. It is critical that we look to the future. We must have the wisdom to see what enhances our area and, conversely, what will disrupt, only to provide value outside our area.
